about veloroutes.org
veloroutes.org was started as a personal project due to the love of cycling and programming. after using other mapping sites, i decided i wanted to make my own mapping site, just the way i want it. this site is the result of that effort (launched 11/2006). it will probably never be finished, so any feedback would be great! (e-mail me at: veloroutes @ gmail)
veloroutes.org features
- save/share/find bicycle routes
- discover new hills, good/bad bicycle routes
- download routes in KML (Google Earth) and GPX (for GPS devices) formats
- get elevation data for the world, topo maps for the US
- generate cue sheets for your rides (added 8/2007)
about me
i'm a software engineer and cyclist in the seattle area - you can read about my rides and other fun stuff on my cycling blog.

i pay for the (dedicated) hosting costs for the site out of my pocket currently, so any monetary help is greatly appreciated!

info about data sources
- interactive maps: google maps api provides the main data source for street-level & satellite maps, as well as general geocoding. terraserver provides the topographic maps, while iowa state university provides the doppler-radar maps.
- elevation data: USGS elevation service, with earthtools.org as a backup if the USGS returns zero or an error (which happens often).
- map overlays are done using the tphoto googlemaps api extension. (see king county bike map overlay on the seattle page)
- webcams are from various departments of transportation as well as news organizations.
- location data: each route's starting locaiton is automatically set using a reverse-geocoding service from geonames.org. This service is also used for the location information gathered for the cue-sheets.
- weather feeds come from rssweather
- media: flickr and youtube's apis provide the bike photos and bike videos, respectively.
- inspiration from gmap-pedometer among others.
